Today Weather
India is currently experiencing intense monsoon activity, as weather systems strengthen across the country. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued alerts for heavy rainfall and thunderstorms in 17 states, with possible impacts including flash floods, lightning strikes, and local disruption of daily life.

Key Weather Systems at Play
A combination of monsoon troughs, low-pressure areas, and upper air cyclonic circulations are bringing widespread rainfall. Moist winds from the Bay of Bengal and Arabian Sea are feeding the systems, causing continuous showers and stormy conditions across central, northern, and southern India.
States Under Alert
The following states have been placed under yellow, orange, or red alerts, depending on the severity of expected rainfall and thunderstorms:
- North India: Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, and Delhi are expected to receive moderate to heavy rainfall, especially in hilly and low-lying regions. Thunderstorms with lightning are also forecast, especially in the afternoons and evenings.
- Central India: Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh are facing the brunt of monsoon rains. Several districts have already reported waterlogging and road disruptions. Localized heavy rain is expected to continue for the next 24 to 48 hours.
- East India: Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, and West Bengal are likely to experience thunderstorms, strong winds, and downpours. These areas may also see crop damage if intense rain continues over the next few days.
- South India: Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, and coastal Andhra Pradesh are experiencing strong monsoon activity. The IMD has warned of heavy showers, particularly in coastal and ghat areas, which may lead to landslides and flash flooding.
- Northeast India: Assam and Meghalaya, though not among the 17 main states listed, are also seeing heavy rainfall due to moisture inflow and should remain cautious.
Possible Hazards

The IMD warns residents and travelers to be prepared for:
- Urban Flooding: Cities like Bhopal, Patna, and Bengaluru may experience waterlogging and slow traffic due to intense rain.
- Lightning Strikes: Open areas and farmlands are at risk. People are advised to stay indoors during lightning activity.
- Landslides: Hilly regions in Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Kerala are vulnerable and residents are advised to avoid travel during heavy rain.
- Power Disruptions: Falling trees and lightning may cause temporary outages in storm-affected areas.
Safety Measures
- Avoid unnecessary travel during alerts.
- Do not shelter under trees during thunderstorms.
- Secure outdoor items and check drainage in low lying areas.
- Farmers are advised to protect standing crops and avoid working in the fields during stormy weather.
Outlook
According to current forecasts, the heavy rain pattern is expected to continue over the next two to three days in many regions. Weather authorities are monitoring the systems closely and will issue fresh updates as needed.
Citizens are encouraged to follow official weather updates and advisories, stay indoors during high-risk periods, and ensure preparedness for potential emergencies.
