The demand for CNG and electric vehicles is increasing steadily in India, and Tata Motors is looking to strengthen its position in both segments with the Sierra. The company is all set to launch the much-awaited Tata Sierra EV on June 30, marking the return of one of its most iconic SUV nameplates. Meanwhile, a recent development has caught the attention of SUV enthusiasts. A test mule of the Tata Sierra CNG has been spotted on Indian roads, leading to speculation that Tata could introduce a CNG version soon after the electric model. If these reports turn out to be true, buyers may soon get the Sierra in petrol, diesel, electric, and CNG powertrain options.

Tata Sierra CNG on Diwali 2026

Tata Motors is likely to expand the Sierra lineup with a CNG version, offering buyers a more economical and environmentally friendly option. The Tata Sierra CNG is expected to arrive around Diwali 2026 and could use the company’s well-known iCNG twin-cylinder technology. First introduced with the Altroz in 2023, this setup features two 30-litre CNG cylinders neatly placed under the boot floor.

Smart Design and Features

This smart design helps preserve usable boot space, addressing one of the biggest concerns CNG car buyers usually have. Along with better practicality, the Sierra CNG is also expected to offer several safety-focused features. These may include a leak detection system, automatic fuel shut-off in case of emergencies, thermal incident protection, and a micro-switch mechanism. With a combination of lower running costs, practical design, and enhanced safety features, the Sierra CNG could become an attractive option for buyers looking for a spacious and efficient SUV.

Engine Options

Tata Motors has not officially disclosed the engine options for the upcoming Sierra CNG, but it is widely expected to be offered with either a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine or a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol unit. The company is likely to opt for the powertrain that delivers the best combination of fuel efficiency and everyday usability, as mileage remains a major consideration for CNG buyers. Once launched, the Sierra CNG will take on rivals such as the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara CNG and Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder CNG in the midsize SUV segment. However, Tata’s CNG vehicles have generally been praised for offering a more refined driving experience and stronger performance than many competitors. If the Sierra CNG manages to deliver good mileage without compromising on power and practicality, it could become an appealing choice for customers looking for a spacious SUV with lower running costs.
