New Delhi: The BRICS summit is set to begin today, September 11, in the Indian capital, New Delhi, generating significant interest. Guests from abroad have already started arriving for the event. Russian President Vladimir Putin has reached Delhi; he arrived at the Palam Air Force Station in his aircraft around 3 PM.
All eyes are on the BRICS summit, as major agreements between India and Russia are anticipated. A crucial meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Putin is scheduled for today. Discussions will cover various key issues aimed at strengthening strategic, defense, and economic ties. Furthermore, detailed talks may take place on topics such as the fight against terrorism, space cooperation, and curbing drug trafficking.
Meeting to focus on three key points
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin are set to meet today during the BRICS summit. Serious discussions regarding defense are expected during these talks, including the deal for the Sukhoi-57. Concrete negotiations are also anticipated regarding a deal for 75 fifth-generation fighter jets. Additionally, the delivery of the S-400 missile defense system and defense cooperation related to nuclear submarines may be reviewed.
Discussions on crude oil
Crude oil will be the second key point of discussion between the two powerful world leaders. India has already clarified that it will make decisions regarding oil procurement sources and volumes based on its own requirements. The situation in the Strait of Hormuz remains volatile; consequently, India aims to secure its crude oil supplies. In light of this, an agreement on a long-term deal with Russia could be reached.
Discussions on trade in local currencies
The third major point of discussion will be trade in local currencies. The Kremlin has stated that detailed discussions could be held on promoting payments in respective national currencies the rupee and the ruble thereby reducing reliance on the dollar. However, this move could irk several major nations.
Putin Welcomed at Delhi Airport
Putin received a grand welcome upon his arrival at Delhi airport. In a post on the social media platform X, Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated that Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh accorded a grand welcome to the Russian President at the airport.
He also highlighted the “multifaceted and long-standing” bilateral ties between India and Russia. The post further extended a warm welcome to Russian President Vladimir Putin for the 18th BRICS Summit.
