In ancient times there was a very powerful demon named Mur, he was very proud of his power, intoxicated with the pride of his power, one day he attacked heaven and defeated all the gods and goddesses including Indra and became the ruler of heaven, due to which all the gods got frightened and went to the shelter of Lord Shiva, Lord Shiva asked all the gods to go to Lord Vishnu, hearing this all the gods went to Lord Vishnu and praised Vishnu and asked him to free them from the atrocities of the demon Mur, hearing this Lord Vishnu said, all of you do not worry, I will soon kill this demon.

After this, Lord Vishnu along with the gods reached a city called Chandravati where Mura ruled, after which a fierce war started between Mura and the demons. This war continued for many years but no one’s victory or defeat was decided. After this war, Lord Vishnu got tired but Mura did not accept defeat.

After this, Lord Vishnu went to rest in Hemvati cave in Badrika Ashram and got absorbed in Yoga Nidra. Following him, Mura also reached the cave and seeing Lord Vishnu sleeping, started planning to kill him. As soon as he was about to attack Lord Vishnu, a very bright girl appeared from the body of Lord Vishnu and she asked Mura to fight. After this, a fierce battle took place between Mura and that bright girl, after which that girl killed Mura by severing his head from his body.When Lord Vishnu awoke from his sleep, he saw a demon named Mura lying on the ground.

He saw the girl before him. He asked, “Who are you? And who killed him?” The girl replied, “Lord, I was born from your own body and I killed Mura.” Hearing this, Lord Vishnu was extremely pleased and said, “O Goddess, you were born on Ekadashi today. Therefore, from today on, you will be known as Goddess Ekadashi. I grant you this boon: whoever observes your fast with devotion and devout devotion on this day will be freed from all their sins and attain salvation. This fast is considered the best of all fasts. Since then, Ekadashi has been observed, and Goddess Ekadashi is also worshipped along with Lord Vishnu, and this day is called Utpanna Ekadashi.”
