New Delhi
Muharram, the first month of the Islamic calendar, holds great spiritual and emotional importance for both Sunni and Shia Muslims. Unlike other months, Muharram is not only a time of prayer and devotion but also of remembrance and mourning, especially for the events that took place centuries ago in Islamic history.

In 2025, Muharram is expected to begin on the evening of Sunday, June 27, 2025, depending on the sighting of the moon. The Islamic calendar is lunar, so dates may vary slightly from region to region based on local moon sightings. As the month begins, Muslims around the world reflect on its historical and religious significance, and for many, it is a time of deep introspection and spiritual renewal.
Ashura
One of the most important days in Muharram is the 10th day, known as Ashura. This day is particularly significant for a number of reasons. For Sunni Muslims, Ashura is remembered as the day when Prophet Musa (Moses) and his followers were saved from Pharaoh’s tyranny by the parting of the Red Sea. Many Sunni Muslims fast on this day in gratitude to God, following the tradition of the Prophet Muhammad.

For Shia Muslims, however, Ashura holds a much deeper and sorrowful meaning. It marks the martyrdom of Imam Hussain ibn Ali, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad, in the Battle of Karbala in 680 CE. Imam Hussain stood against injustice and tyranny, and despite being heavily outnumbered, he and his followers chose to uphold their principles even at the cost of their lives. His sacrifice is remembered with great reverence and mourning during the entire month, especially on the 10th day.

During Muharram, many Shia Muslims participate in processions, recite elegies, and hold majlis (gatherings) to honor the memory of Imam Hussain and his companions. It is a period marked by a deep sense of loss but also by the values of courage, justice, and unwavering faith.

New Islamic Year
Although Muharram is a sacred month for all Muslims, the ways in which it is observed can vary. Some spend the time in quiet reflection and extra prayers, while others participate in communal gatherings and events to honor the sacrifices made during this month.
In essence, Muharram 2025 is not only the beginning of a new Islamic year but also a powerful reminder of resilience, sacrifice, and the pursuit of truth, values that continue to inspire millions around the world.
