Northern India is witnessing intense monsoon activity, particularly in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, where heavy rainfall has caused rivers to rise significantly. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a fresh update on the monsoon, warning of more downpours in the coming days.
Rivers Overflowing, Flood Concerns Grow
In both UP and Bihar, persistent rainfall over the last few days has led to an alarming rise in river water levels. Key rivers such as the Ganga, Ghaghara, and Kosi are flowing close to or above the danger mark in several locations. Low-lying areas are already experiencing waterlogging, and in some regions, local authorities have initiated evacuation efforts as a precaution.
The continuous rainfall has also affected daily life. Roads in many districts are waterlogged, and agricultural lands are submerged. Villagers in flood-prone zones have been advised to move to higher ground, while disaster management teams have been placed on alert.
IMD’s Major Monsoon Update
According to the IMD, the monsoon has become more active due to favorable atmospheric conditions. A strong low-pressure system is developing over the Bay of Bengal, which is likely to intensify and move northwestward, bringing more rain to central and northern India.
The IMD has issued orange alerts for several states, including Uttarakhand, Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Kerala. On 28th June, these regions are expected to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall, raising the risk of flash floods and landslides in hilly terrains.
Urban Areas Brace for Impact
Metro cities like Lucknow and Patna have already seen prolonged spells of rain, causing traffic disruptions and power outages. With more rainfall expected, civic bodies are gearing up for emergency response. Authorities are clearing drains, deploying water pumps, and ensuring shelters are ready for displaced families.

The IMD has urged residents in affected and vulnerable areas to stay informed through official weather updates. People are advised to avoid travel during peak rain hours, refrain from going near overflowing rivers, and stock up on essentials in case of prolonged disruption.
