Rainfall
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning for heavy to very heavy rainfall in many districts of Uttar Pradesh, including Lucknow, Gorakhpur, and other eastern and central parts of the state. The alert comes as the monsoon current strengthens across northern India.

According to the IMD, an active low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal has moved towards eastern Uttar Pradesh. As a result, the state is expected to receive widespread rainfall over the next few days. Thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds may also accompany the showers.
Districts Likely to Be Affected
The rainfall is expected to impact more than 40 districts in the next 48 hours. Some of the main districts under alert include:
- Lucknow
- Gorakhpur
- Varanasi
- Prayagraj
- Maharajganj
- Siddharthnagar
- Barabanki
- Bahraich
- Sitapur
- Lakhimpur Kheri
These regions could experience moderate to heavy rainfall, with isolated areas receiving very heavy rainfall, possibly leading to local waterlogging and traffic disruption.

Weather Relief from Heatwave
The rain has brought much-needed relief from the humid heat that had gripped most of the state during the last week of July. Temperatures in cities like Lucknow and Kanpur have dropped by 4–6°C. Daytime highs are now hovering around 30–32°C, making the weather more comfortable for residents.
Thunderstorms and Lightning Risk
Along with rain, the IMD has warned about thunderstorms and lightning, especially in the late afternoon and evening hours. Residents are advised to:
- Stay indoors during thunderstorms
- Avoid open fields or standing under trees
- Secure loose outdoor objects
- Unplug electronic devices during lightning activity
Farming & Travel Impact

Farmers are being advised to take precautionary steps to protect standing crops from excess rain or storm winds. Some areas may also experience brief flooding in low-lying fields or roads.
Travelers should check local weather updates before planning road or rail journeys, as rainfall could delay movement due to slippery roads, fallen trees, or poor visibility.
What’s Ahead?
Rainfall activity is expected to continue for the next 3–5 days, particularly over eastern UP. However, the intensity may reduce slightly after the weekend. The IMD will continue to monitor the situation and issue regular bulletins.
Residents of Uttar Pradesh, especially in Lucknow, Gorakhpur, and nearby districts, should remain cautious as the IMD has predicted heavy rain and storms. While the showers bring relief from heat, they also increase the chances of flooding, lightning, and transport disruption. Keep checking official IMD bulletins for the latest updates.
Precautionary Measures
- Stay updated with official weather forecasts regularly.
- Avoid going outdoors during thunderstorms to minimize risks.
- Secure loose items and ensure proper drainage around homes to prevent waterlogging.
- Farmers should protect crops from excessive rain and strong winds.
- Travelers should check road and rail conditions before moving in affected areas.
