The victory of Jan Suraaj Party founder Prashant Kishor in the Bankipur constituency, a seat that had remained an impregnable BJP stronghold for three decades,s has sparked a new debate in Bihar’s political landscape. This defeat dealt a major blow to the BJP.

During the campaign, Jan Suraaj founder PK targeted Samrat Chaudhary over alleged criminal cases and his educational qualifications. Throughout the election, he focused his campaign on highlighting Chaudhary’s tarnished image. Given the constituency’s proximity to Patna, issues such as unemployment, education, and infrastructure development dominated the discourse. The election also felt the impact of the CJP movement sparked by the NEET exam controversy, leading a large section of the youth to show interest in supporting an educated leader like Prashant Kishor.
PK Succeeds in Generating an Anti-Incumbency Wave
Jan Suraaj founder Prashant Kishor succeeded in generating an anti-incumbency wave in Bankipur. He appealed for votes based on the need for strong leadership, urging voters to look beyond local issues like drains and roads or personal ambitions. The BJP had held the Bankipur seat continuously since 1995. In 2026, the BJP had defeated the RJD here by a margin of 52,000 votes. However, the tables turned completely just eight months later. Prashant Kishor handed a crushing defeat to the BJP, winning by a margin of approximately 19,000 votes. This victory is being viewed as a lifeline for the opposition, allowing them to claim that the public is dissatisfied with the BJP government.
What Prashant Kishor said after the victory
After securing victory in the Bankipur by-election, Prashant Kishor made a significant statement. He remarked that the people here had sent a clear message to the BJP leadership to appoint a capable individual as the Chief Minister of Bihar.
PK further added that if the BJP wishes to replace Samrat Chaudhary with another leader from the Kushwaha community, that is entirely their decision. He stated that they have no objection to this, provided that the person chosen is a competent and honest individual from the Kushwaha community.
