The election commission on sunday rejected and called false the claim made by the former union minister P.Chidambaram about adding the e 6.5 lakh voter names in Tamil Nadu. the Commission said that lining the ongoing special intensiv revision SIR in bihar with tamil Nadu is completey wrong, as SIR Has not even started even in tamil nadu yet. P. Chidambara had posted on social media X hat migrant workers are being registered as voters in tamil nadu. He also said this is a very serious interference in the rights of the people of the southern state to choose a government of their choice.

The Election Commission Clarified that P.Chidambaram’s claim was misleading and based on the wrong facts. It also said that voter registration is done according to set the rules and there is no link between the processes in the different states. The commission urged people not to spread confusion with the unverified information.

Recently, Congress Leader P.Chidambaram said that to be registered as a voter, a person must have a fixed and permanent legal home. he said migrant workers have such homes in bihar or other states, so how can they be registered as voters in tamil nadu? he also questioned how someone can be considered a permanent resident of tamil nadu if their family and permanent home are still in bihar. Chidambaram raised concern about the election commission;s role, saying it is misusing its powers. he alleged that the commission is trying to change the electoral nature and character of states by registering migrant workers in places where they are not permanent residents. According to him, this can affect the democratic right of local people to elect their own government. He emphasized that voter registration should follow all the proper rules and not be used to influence elections in any of the state in unfair manner.

The Election Commission in a fact check post On X called such claims misleading and baseless. it said that under article 19 (1) (e) of the constitution, every citizen has the right to live and settle anywhere in india. According to the section 19(b) of the representation of the people act, 1950 any of the person who is an ordinary resident of a constituency can register of a constituency can register as a voter there. the commission clarified that it’s up to the voters to register in the constituency where they live. so, someone from tamil nadu is living in delhi can register in delhi, and a bihari living in chennai can register in chennai.
