New Delhi: Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar has come under fire from all opposition political parties regarding the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process. On Tuesday, parties belonging to the INDIA bloc held a protest march in the capital, Delhi. During the protest, Delhi Police detained Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi, and SP President Akhilesh Yadav.
Meanwhile, a significant update regarding the Chief Election Commissioner has emerged. Amidst mounting protests, the decision has been made to postpone Gyanesh Kumar’s scheduled visit to Chhattisgarh. He was due to visit the state starting Wednesday, but the trip has now been deferred. Along with the opposition, other groups are continuously demanding his resignation and have announced plans to take to the streets in protest.

Gyanesh Kumar’s Visit Cancelled
Opposition to Gyanesh Kumar is intensifying on the streets, with supporters and workers of the INDIA alliance persistently demanding his resignation. The Election Commission issued a statement noting that while Kumar was scheduled to visit Chhattisgarh on October 7–8, the trip has been postponed for important reasons. The Election Commission has not yet announced a new date for the visit. Previously, his visit to Uttar Pradesh, where he was scheduled to visit two locations, had also been postponed.
INDIA Bloc’s Protest Against Gyanesh Kumar
Protests against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar are taking place across the country. Political, social, and student organisations are voicing their dissent and demanding his resignation. Notably, on Tuesday, INDIA alliance MPs, including Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi, held a protest march.
Security forces intercepted them before they could reach the Election Commission office. After being stopped by the police, Rahul and Priyanka staged a sit-in protest within the Akashvani Bhawan complex. Subsequently, the police took them into custody after a significant struggle. Meanwhile, at 8 PM, the police detained Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi, and leaders from some allied parties, and took them away in a bus.

According to the party, Rahul Gandhi and other Congress leaders were subsequently released from police custody. Opposition parties are demanding the removal of the Chief Election Commissioner and the cancellation of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
CJP to stage protests in Delhi starting October 10
The Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) will stage continuous protests starting October 10, 2026, demanding the resignation of Gyanesh Kumar. The party has decided to gather at Jantar Mantar for the demonstration. The Delhi Police have also stepped up their activity following this announcement. Two months ago, the CJP had successfully secured the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan while protesting against the NEET paper leak.
