Zomato’s founder and CEO, Deepinder Goyal, said on Wednesday that the company received over 18,000 applications for the ‘Chief of Staff’ position. Out of these, 30 candidates have been offered different roles. He also clarified that “no one has paid any money to work with us.”

It is worth mentioning that in November, the company faced controversy for setting unusual criteria for the ‘Chief of Staff’ position.

What Was the ₹20 Lakh Controversy?

Zomato CEO Deepinder Goyal had earlier said that candidates selected for the ‘Chief of Staff’ position would have to pay ₹20 lakh in the first year. This amount was meant to be donated to the non-profit organization ‘Feeding India.’ Additionally, the company offered to donate ₹50 lakh to a charity of the candidate’s choice.

Goyal claimed that this role would provide “10 times more learning than a two-year degree from a top management school.” He also said it would give candidates the opportunity to work closely with him and some of the smartest minds in customer technology.

However, on Wednesday, Goyal clarified that out of the 30 selected candidates, 18 had already been working in key roles at Zomato and other group companies like Blinkit. He stated that these employees are being well-compensated for the value they bring. He also mentioned that out of these 18 people, four work directly with him, and two of them hold the ‘Chief of Staff’ position.

Zomato’s Hiring Process Is Still Ongoing

Zomato CEO Deepinder Goyal stated that their hiring process is far from over. With more than 18,000 applications received, the company is still carefully shortlisting talented individuals. He emphasized that this is not just a one-time recruitment drive but a long-term investment in people who will contribute to the company’s future. Goyal assured that Zomato is committed to selecting the right candidates, even if the process takes time. He added that they are taking a thoughtful and strategic approach to hiring, ensuring that each selected individual aligns with the company’s vision. According to him, Zomato aims to build a strong team that will drive innovation and growth. While the process may be slow, they are determined to bring in the best talent.
