Weather
Delhi is once again under a yellow alert as the weather department has predicted heavy rainfall over the next two days. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued this alert in response to the interaction of three major weather systems that are coming together over the northern plains. The capital, which has already experienced intermittent showers in recent weeks, is now bracing for more intense rain and a significant drop in temperature.

What is a Yellow Alert?
A yellow alert is a weather warning that signals the need to “be aware.” It is issued when there is a possibility of moderate to heavy rainfall that could lead to waterlogging, traffic disruptions, and localized flooding in low-lying areas. Though not as severe as an orange or red alert, a yellow warning should still be taken seriously, especially in urban areas like Delhi where drainage systems can quickly become overwhelmed.
The Three Weather Systems Behind the Rain
The current alert in Delhi is due to the convergence of three key weather patterns:
- Western Disturbance: A fresh western disturbance has moved in from the northwest, bringing moisture-laden winds into the upper layers of the atmosphere. These disturbances are common during this time of year and often trigger rainfall in North India.
- Low-Pressure System from the Bay of Bengal: A low-pressure area has formed over the Bay of Bengal and is moving northwestward. As it moves closer to central and northern India, it is injecting a large amount of humidity into the region.
- Monsoon Trough Positioning: The monsoon trough the region where winds from both hemispheres meet is currently positioned over northern India, passing close to Delhi. This enhances the rainfall potential significantly.
When these three systems align, they create ideal conditions for heavy to very heavy rainfall across Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR).

What to Expect Over the Next Two Days
The IMD has forecast widespread rainfall across Delhi and nearby areas, particularly during the evening and night hours. Rainfall intensity is expected to increase, with thunderstorms and gusty winds also likely. Daytime temperatures will drop to around 28–30°C, providing some relief from the recent heat, but humidity levels will remain high.
Waterlogging in low-lying areas and traffic congestion are likely, especially during peak hours. Residents are advised to plan travel accordingly and avoid unnecessary outdoor activity during heavy rain.

Safety Precautions
- Avoid waterlogged roads and underpasses.
- Stay indoors during thunderstorms and lightning.
- Secure outdoor items that may get damaged by wind.
- Keep emergency contact numbers handy.
With the convergence of multiple weather systems, Delhi is set to experience heavy rainfall over the next two days. The yellow alert serves as a timely reminder for residents to stay cautious and prepare for weather-related disruptions. As always, keeping an eye on local weather updates and advisories can go a long way in staying safe and minimizing inconvenience.
