Congress MP shashi tharoor has reacted to the controversy during the asia cup where indian cricketers avoided shaking hands with pakistani players and also to the gestures made by pakistani cricketers on the field. he said that once the decision to play against pkaistan was taken the matter should be approached in the true spirit of sports. according to him, if india feels so strongly not have played at all. but since the match was played players should have respected the spirit of the game and shaken hands.
Shashi tharoor also recalled a past example to highlight his views on the India-pkaistan handshake row. he said that in 1999 during the kargil war, indian soldiers were sacrificing their lives for the nation while, at the same time the indian cricket team was playing against pakstan in the world cup in england. even then, indian players shook hands with their paksitani counterparts because the spirit of sports is different from teh sentiments that exist between nations and armies. sharing his perspective, tharoor added that if the pakistani team decided to insult indian players after feeling humiliated once, it only shows that the spirit of the game was lackig on both sides which is unfortunate.
Shahsi tharoor has state that while emotions against pakistan are natural,the spirit of sports should remain seperate from politics and military conflicts. he also further remarked that both the sides have shown a lack of sportsmanship in their reactions. meanwhile, on thursday, the BCCI Offiically lodged a complaint against pakistani player sahibzada farhan and haris rauf for inappropriate behavior during the asia cup super 4 match on september 21. in the ongoing asia cup 2025,, India has convincingly defeated pakistan in both encouners, strengthening its position. with the india already securing a place in the final there is a strong possibility that the much anticipated title clash on sunday will once again be between india and pakistan.
