New Delhi: PM Narendra Modi stated that the mobile phone has evolved beyond a mere tool for communication into a major medium for good governance. He also highlighted various aspects of the digital era, noting that funds have reached beneficiaries’ bank accounts through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT). PM Modi made these remarks at the India Mobile Congress.
During the event, he discussed digital technology and government schemes, noting that savings amounting to approximately ₹5 lakh crore have been realised. In this context, he remarked that those whose unearned income streams have been cut off are unlikely to love Modi.
Funds Reaching Beneficiaries’ Accounts – PM Modi
PM Modi emphasised the importance of digitalisation, stating that the government’s digital infrastructure ensures that aid reaches beneficiaries’ bank accounts directly and seamlessly. He further noted that government assistance has reached people through mobile-linked bank accounts, helping to curb systemic leakages.
Funds totalling ₹50 lakh crore have reached beneficiaries’ accounts through the direct banking system, resulting in savings of around ₹5 lakh crore. Modi remarked that this is no small sum and noted that the money was prevented from falling into the wrong hands. He asked rhetorically whether those whose unearned income had been halted would love him.
He asked the audience if the government had done the right thing and whether such irregularities should be stopped. He further stated that despite opposition and criticism, he would continue this work and see it through to completion.

The Evolving Role of Mobile Phones Over 12 Years
PM Modi went on to observe that the role of the mobile phone has changed significantly over the past 10 to 12 years. It is no longer merely a device for communication; mobile phones are now also serving as a medium to deliver the benefits of government services to the people. He noted that hundreds of government services are now available on mobile phones. He added that people no longer need to make repeated visits to government offices for various tasks. The digital system has significantly transformed the way government services reach the public.
What the PM said on cybersecurity
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also addressed the issues of deepfakes and cybersecurity. He expressed concern regarding digital security, raising points about data protection and cyber fraud. He highlighted the challenges posed by technologies like deepfakes and emphasised the need for a robust framework to tackle the ever-growing challenges of the digital era.
