In ancient times, a king named Chaitrarath ruled the city of Vaidish. He was a religious, truthful, and a devotee of Lord Vishnu. All the residents of that kingdom observed the Ekadashi fast with great devotion and faith. Once, the king and all the people of Vaidish observed a fast on Amalaki Ekadashi and worshipped Lord Vishnu. After the puja was over, the king went hunting in the forest and lost his way. He reached a place inhabited by many demons.

As soon as the demons saw him, they attacked him. The king fell unconscious while fighting the demons. As the demons went to kill him, a divine and radiant woman suddenly appeared from his body, holding a trident. The demons were frightened by the sight. The goddess destroyed all the demons and then re-entered the king’s body.

As soon as the king regained consciousness, he saw that everyone was lying dead, so he wondered how this happened, then a voice came from the sky saying, “King, this is the same Amalaki which was born from your body due to the effect of your fast, which has protected you, all this has happened due to the effect of Amalaki fast.” Hearing this, the king became very happy and he returned to his city and announced in the city that the fast of Amalaki Ekadashi gives very virtuous results, hence all the people of the kingdom should observe this fast.
