Even before the election dates are announced, a familiar name has resurfaced in Western UP politics: Chaudhary Sunil Singh, the National President of the Lok Dal. He met with SP chief and former UP CM Akhilesh Yadav in Lucknow on Friday.
This meeting is considered highly significant ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections. It is viewed not merely as a matter of seat-sharing, but also as a strategic move to counter the influence of Jayant Chaudhary’s RLD and address the dynamics of the Jat-farmer vote bank in Western Uttar Pradesh. The Jat vote holds the power to influence the outcome of numerous seats in Western UP. Consequently, Lok Dal chief Sunil Singh is seeking around three dozen seats. Singh stated that the goal is to make Akhilesh Yadav the Chief Minister of UP in 2027. While the party has mentioned a figure of approximately 35 seats, discussions regarding seat-sharing are ongoing.
He emphasised that the party seeks a respectable share of seats. However, the underlying political narrative of this meeting extends beyond the specific number of 35 seats. Lok Dal national spokesperson Harish Hoon stated that while they are prepared to contest around 35 seats, they will accept whatever number Akhilesh Yadav allocates and contribute to making him the Chief Minister by winning those seats.
Which Lok Dal is Sunil Singh leading?
A path distinct from Jayant Chaudhary’s RLD, yet sharing the same legacy, the name ‘Lok Dal’ is not new to UP politics. Chaudhary Charan Singh founded the Lok Dal party in 1979. Following his death in 1987, the party splintered into several factions. In 1995, Ajit Singh established the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD).
Jayant Chaudhary, the current National President of the RLD, is carrying forward this legacy inherited from his father. On the other hand, there is Chaudhary Sunil Singh, the national president of the original Lok Dal, who links his party to the political legacy of Chaudhary Charan Singh. Because of these factors, when Sunil Singh and Akhilesh Yadav meet, the discussion is not limited merely to seat-sharing between two small parties.
