PM Surya Ghar Yojana: The government has launched the Surya Ghar Yojana for those troubled by rising electricity bills. Launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 13, 2024, the scheme aims to install rooftop solar panels in 10 million homes and provide up to 300 units of free electricity. The scheme also offers a subsidy of up to ₹78,000. If you have surplus electricity, you can sell it to generate an annual income of ₹18,000 to ₹20,000.
People are often troubled by their rising electricity bills, whether they use geysers or heaters in the winter or refrigerators and air conditioners in the summer. However, this scheme has brought significant relief. People are now finding relief from these high electricity bills. So far, more than 2.5 million families have benefited from this scheme and installed solar panels on their rooftops. The government aims to connect one crore houses with solar energy by March 2027 and the target is to connect 40 lakh houses with solar energy in 2026.
300 units of free electricity PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana

Under the PM Surya Ghar Yojana, up to 300 units of electricity are provided free of cost. If you install solar panels on the roof of your house under this scheme, you will not only get 300 units of free electricity but also a subsidy of up to Rs 78,000. Apart from this, you can also earn Rs 15,000 to 18,000 annually by selling the surplus electricity to the DISCOM. The objective of this scheme is to provide free electricity to the people and make them self-reliant in the field of energy.
Those who want to earn additional income through this can also create income. With this scheme, people will now be free from the hassles of electricity bills and the electricity bill will be reduced and they will be able to generate an income by selling the surplus electricity.
How much subsidy is given PM Surya Ghar Yojana

If you apply for PM Surya Ghar Yojana 2026 and avail the benefits of this scheme, then you get 300 units of electricity for free, apart from this you are also given subsidy in it. If you install a solar plant capacity of 1 kilo watt, then you get a subsidy of up to 30,000 and if you install a solar panel of 2 kilo watt capacity, then you get a subsidy of up to 60,000 and on installing a solar plant of 3 kilo watt or more, a maximum subsidy of up to 78,000 is given.
There are some states like Haryana and Bihar to which the state government also gives additional subsidy from its side, where in Haryana, Antyodaya families are given a subsidy of up to 1.10 lakh on installing a 2 kilo watt solar panel.
How to apply

Applying for PM Surya Ghar Yojana is very easy –
- To apply, first complete your registration. To complete the registration, visit its official website pmsuryaghar.gov.in and select your state and electricity distribution company (DISCOM).
- Now enter your consumer mobile number and email ID.
- Now wait for the technical feasibility from DISCOM.
- Now choose one of the approved vendors and get your panel installed.
- After the panel is installed, net metering will be installed and then upload the commissioning report on the portal.
- After completing this process, the subsidy received under this scheme will be credited to your bank account within 30 days.
