Amul Reduces Prices on 700+ Dairy Products Following GST Revision

Amul has announced price cuts on over 700 products, including ghee, butter, cheese, ice cream, and other dairy items, effective September 22, 2025. The move comes in response to the recent Goods and Services Tax (GST) slab revision.

This follows Mother Dairy’s price reductions on September 16, which ranged from ₹2 to ₹30 across products like tetra pack milk, paneer, cheese, ghee, butter, ice cream, and processed Safal items.

Key price changes from Amul include:

  • Ghee: One-liter container drops ₹40 to ₹610.
  • Butter: 100-gram pack reduced from ₹62 to ₹58.
  • Cheese: One-kilogram block decreases by ₹30 to ₹545.
  • Paneer: 200-gram frozen pack falls from ₹99 to ₹95.

Other products, including UHT milk, chocolates, baked goods, frozen snacks, peanut spread, condensed milk, and malt beverages, also see price reductions. However, pouch milk prices remain unchanged as it now carries zero GST.

According to Jayan Mehta, Managing Director of the Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation, the company is passing the full benefits of the GST reduction directly to customers. The price cuts aim to boost consumption of dairy products such as cheese, butter, and ice cream, which remains relatively low in India.

Under the new GST structure, effective September 22, the previous four GST slabs will be simplified to two: 5% and 18%. This reduction will lower costs for both essential items, like soap and shampoo, and high-value items, including cars and air conditioners.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced that essential foods such as milk, bread, paratha, and chhena will remain GST-free, as will individual health and life insurance. Additionally, 33 medications for serious or rare illnesses and other life-saving drugs are exempt from GST.

Luxury goods, tobacco products, motorcycles with engines over 350cc, and medium-sized cars will see a higher GST rate of 40% instead of 28%.
