Ambani family ranked as richest business family

The second consecutive year, the Ambani family has maintained its position as the most valuable family business in the 2025 Hurun India Most Valuable Family Businesses list. According to The Economic Times, their family’s company, Reliance Industries, is worth an astounding Rs 28.2 lakh crore, or about 12% of India’s GDP.

For the second year, the Ambani family ranks first among Hurun India’s Most Valuable Family Businesses. The Birla family’s valuation of Rs 6.5 lakh crore puts them in second place.Third place goes to the Jindal family, with Rs 5.7 lakh crore.

According to the report, the Kumar Mangalam Birla family rose to second position with a valuation of Rs 6.5 lakh crore, an increase of Rs 1.1 lakh crore from the previous year. The Jindal family gained Rs 1 lakh crore in value and came in third with Rs 5.7 lakh crore. The combined value of the top three is Rs 40.4 lakh crore, which is nearly equal to the Philippines’ GDP.

The Kumar Mangalam Birla family, meanwhile, comes in at number two on the list. Their company is now worth ₹6.5 lakh crore, up ₹1.1 lakh crore. The top three also include the Jindal family. With a gain of ₹1 lakh crore, their company was valued at ₹5.7 lakh crore.

In terms of first-generation family businesses, Adani comes in first.

Additionally, Hurun India has published a report on the most valued “first-generation” family enterprises in India. First place goes to Gautam Adani’s Adani Group. Adani’s company is valued at ₹14 lakh crore.

On this list, the Poonawalla family comes in second. Their company is worth ₹2.3 lakh crore. The Divi family is rated third with a valuation of ₹1.8 lakh crore.

The Hurun List was created in 1999 by a British accountant.

Hurun is a global research organization that focuses on economic trends, entrepreneurship, and wealth. It is formally called the Hurun Research Institute. Rupert Hoogewerf, a British scholar and accountant, founded it in 1999.

In order to identify and rank the wealthiest people in China, Hoogewerf also known by his Chinese moniker, “Hu Run”—founded Hurun. It has grown into an internationally renowned institution in recent years.
