Consequently, crude oil prices in the global market soared to record highs. Following this, Indian petroleum companies delivered a major blow to consumers by implementing significant hikes in petrol and diesel prices.

After a gap of four years, a price increase of Rs 3 per litre for petrol was recorded on May 15, 2026. Four days later, on May 19, oil companies raised the price of petrol by 87 paise per litre and diesel by 91 paise per litre. A third hike took place on May 23; as the price of crude oil in the global market crossed $100 per barrel, prices were increased by an average of 90 paise per litre. Furthermore, in a fourth round of hikes on May 25, the price of petrol was increased by Rs 2.61 per litre, and the price of diesel by Rs 2.71 per litre.
