New Delhi: Just when it seemed that a middle ground for peace might be found between the United States and Iran, tensions are once again expected to escalate. The U.S. may initiate military action against Iran. Such an action would heighten tensions in West Asia, which would inevitably impact trade. U.S. President Donald Trump has spoken of taking action against Iran. In response to this warning, Iran has also mobilised; Iranian officials have stated that if the U.S. attacks, they are prepared to target undersea communication cables, a move that would cause significant commercial losses for other nations.

What did Donald Trump say?

At a large rally in Florida on Friday, U.S. President Donald Trump suggested that the U.S. could launch another “little epic fury.” He also alluded to a U.S. military operation against Iran that began on February 28. He did not specify when or what form such an action might take, nor is it clear how long any potential conflict might last.

The duration of a possible conflict remains uncertain. Meanwhile, fuel prices are already rising, and there is growing concern regarding the impact that new military action could have on the region and the broader economy. It has also been noted that previous attacks by the U.S. and Israel have resulted in thousands of deaths and the displacement of millions of people.

The U.S. will end the war soon.

Donald Trump stated that the U.S. could bring the conflict to an end very quickly. He posed the question of whether the U.S. should end it immediately or gradually weaken the adversary. Trump asserted that the U.S. possesses the power to bring the war to a close. The core question is whether to end it abruptly or allow it to wind down gradually.

He also noted that oil continues to flow through the Strait of Hormuz. Donald Trump has previously offered varying objectives and timelines regarding this potential conflict. He had stated that the United States would not be able to launch an attack on Iran before the upcoming midterm elections that will determine control of the U.S. Congress.

Warnings from France and Turkey

Amidst expectations of renewed military action against Iran, several nations have issued warnings. On Friday, representatives from the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Turkey, Egypt, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and Italy met in Istanbul. Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan stated that a new attack on Iran would escalate tensions and could cause the conflict to spread throughout the entire region. He emphasised that the only path to resolving this conflict is through dialogue and diplomacy.
