New Delhi: Playing music on a loudspeaker while on a moving train could lead to trouble. Train passengers need to keep a few important points in mind, as Indian Railways has issued new rules regarding loud music. Violating these rules can result in both a fine and imprisonment. It is essential to understand these regulations. Southern Railway has implemented strict rules under Section 145(2) of the Railways Act, further amended by the ‘Jan Vishwas Act’.

If someone is caught playing loud music or watching videos (such as ‘reels’) on a train, they will face an initial fine of up to ₹1,000. Furthermore, under these rules, the passenger may be deboarded from the train, and the TTE (Train Ticket Examiner) is authorised to take strict action, including the confiscation of the passenger’s ticket.

Fines for ignoring the initial warning

If a passenger fails to comply after an initial warning, they could face up to six months in prison or a fine of up to ₹5,000. The Railways has empowered TTEs to take such action. To raise awareness, announcements will be made, and notices will be displayed at railway stations. The Railways have advised passengers to use earphones and keep their voices low while travelling.

This applies particularly to AC coaches. Although the Railway Board had previously issued guidelines in 2012, they proved ineffective. Now, the Railway has mandated fines for any violations. Passengers can also report fellow travellers using the ‘Rail Sahayata’ (Rail Assistance) app. This move comes in response to a persistent stream of complaints received by the Railway Board.

In train compartments, especially in AC coaches,s people often talk loudly on their mobile phones, engage in long conversations, or use loud or offensive ringtones. This causes significant inconvenience to other passengers. The Railways has appealed to passengers to act responsibly and avoid causing disturbance to others.

What should passengers do?

For this, you should keep your mobile phone on silent or vibration mode, or set the ringtone volume to a low level. Also, avoid speaking loudly on the phone. Furthermore, keep your conversations as brief as possible so that peace is maintained on the train and all passengers can travel comfortably.
