New Delhi: In several French cities, crowds of protesters have taken to the streets, demanding access to basic amenities. In many locations, large numbers of demonstrators furious over the rising cost of living have engaged in acts of violence. Amidst this unrest, a fire broke out at the historic town hall in Limoges, causing widespread chaos; the structure was ultimately destroyed. The building was 143 years old, having been constructed in 1873.

Furthermore, protesters engaged in acts of arson and threw stones in various locations, leading to violent clashes in which several police officers were injured. The destruction of this building has been described as a major disaster for the nation’s heritage, and the targeting of the structure by protesters has drawn widespread condemnation.

Protesters set fire to a police vehicle.

The protesters in France—who took to the streets to demand access to essential services have become increasingly aggressive. Outside the town hall, demonstrators targeted a police vehicle and set it ablaze. Firefighting teams have now been deployed throughout the area surrounding the town hall, and police personnel have been stationed everywhere to maintain security.

Major update from the French Ministry of the Interior

According to the French Ministry of the Interior, approximately 550,000 people participated in the protests on Saturday, while the CGT union estimates the number of participants to be around 800,000. Reports indicate that nearly 1,200 individuals have been arrested. In several cities, protesters engaged in arson, looting, and vandalism, severely disrupting daily life. The French police are currently struggling to restore order.

Police Action Against Protesters

Police made every possible effort to bring the masked protesters under control. As a security measure, they deployed tear gas and used water cannons against the protesters. Meanwhile, protesters set fire to vehicles in the capital. In the city of Lyon, protesters set a tourist office ablaze.

In Marseille and Lille, they broke into town halls, while in Bordeaux, they entered and damaged a police facility. Paris Deputy Mayor Emmanuel Grégoire stated that entire streets in the capital have been left in ruins. The President has declared that those who engaged in such acts of violence and disorder will be prosecuted and held accountable.

What did the US Vice President say?

Amid the ongoing protests in France, US Vice President JD Vance has held Western liberals responsible for the situation. In a post on the social media platform X, he stated that in the name of diversity and compassion, Western liberals brought people from the Third World to France and other nations, settling them there. In doing so, they also overlooked fundamental issues such as social integration and assimilation.
