EPFO Update

New Delhi: If someone in your family is a PF (Provident Fund) subscriber, this information will prove to be very useful. A portion of an employee’s monthly salary is deducted and deposited into their PF account. The objective is to build savings for employees, which can serve as significant financial support after retirement. You will be pleased to know that it is possible to withdraw funds from your PF account even before retirement. While this might come as a surprise, it is absolutely true. This allows you to easily address pending tasks or financial needs without any unnecessary stress.

The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has made the rules regarding PF advances much simpler and more transparent. Under the new regulations, the minimum membership period required to be eligible for a partial withdrawal has been reduced to 12 months.

For what purposes and how many times can you withdraw from your PF?

The EPFO has categorized various requirements into three groups: essential needs, housing-related needs, and special circumstances.

Withdrawals for Medical Emergencies

If a family member is undergoing medical treatment, you can make a partial withdrawal from your PF account. There is no specified upper limit for withdrawals made in the event of a medical emergency.

Expenses for Children’s Education and Marriages

To cover the costs of your children’s higher education, you are permitted to make an advance PF withdrawal up to 10 times throughout your entire period of employment. For marriage-related expenses—whether for yourself or a family member—there is a provision to make withdrawals up to 5 times.

Withdrawals for Housing Needs

If you are planning to purchase a new home or a plot of land, there is no need to worry. Whether you wish to renovate your home or pay off instalments on an existing home loan, you can utilise your PF account to fulfil these goals. You can make up to 5 advance withdrawals for needs related to housing.

What should you do in special circumstances?

It is worth noting that you can also withdraw PF funds under special circumstances. The Central Board provides relief to employees in certain specific circumstances or emergencies. In such cases, employees are permitted to make advance withdrawals twice within a single financial year.

How much can you withdraw from your PF?

According to the latest EPFO guidelines, if you have completed 12 months of membership, you can withdraw up to 75% of your PF balance as an advance. This balance includes your own contribution, the employer’s contribution, and the interest accrued thereon. Before opting for a PF advance, be sure to check your eligibility. You can submit an application online by visiting the official EPFO member services portal.
