chorbagan stampede

New Delhi: A harrowing incident has been reported from West Bengal, where a sudden stampede at the Chorbagan pandal resulted in the deaths of 19 people. Additionally, 25 individuals sustained injuries. The injured were rushed to the hospital, where some are reported to be in critical condition. So far, the police have taken 12 people into custody in connection with the incident, including some of the organisers. The pandal where the stampede occurred had been honoured by the government with the “Best of the Best” award.

Furthermore, this Durga Puja celebration had been recognised with the “Devi Durga Samman 2026” by an information agency. Given that some of the injured remain in critical condition, the death toll could potentially rise. Meanwhile, the Chief Minister has ordered an investigation into the incident.

Chief Minister Orders Investigation

The Chief Minister of West Bengal has directed an inquiry into the tragedy. The Prime Minister has also announced financial compensation for the families of the deceased. According to an official, 12 individuals have been taken into custody in connection with the Chorbagan incident and are currently being questioned to determine the cause of the tragedy.

Should any negligence be uncovered, legal action will be taken accordingly. The stampede occurred on the day of Maha Saptami amidst rainfall at the Sarbojanin pandal in Chorbagan. The Chief Minister has constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the matter; it will be headed by a sitting High Court judge and will include members from the Special Task Force (STF), the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), and other departments.

Large Crowds at the Pandal

The Chorbagan pandal drew a massive crowd this year. This year’s theme was “Beyond Sound.” This year, the pandal (temporary pavilion) features an atmosphere of tranquillity, deep contemplation, and introspection, a stark contrast to the noise and chaos of urban life. Inside, the idol of Goddess Durga is depicted in a serene, meditative posture, devoid of any weapons.

In 2025, the pandal was designed around the theme ‘Srotosvini’ (a term denoting a flowing stream or river), which focused on the continuous flow of time and the evolution of civilisation. The installation incorporated both ancient and modern timepieces to represent the passage of time, while the idol of Goddess Durga was portrayed as if floating on a boat.

In 2024, the pandal was based on the theme ‘Dugga,’ dedicated to Nari Shakti (women’s power). It highlighted the various roles women play in society, such as mother, wife, and daughter,r along with the struggles they face.

Police Obtain CCTV Footage

The Anti-Rowdy Section of the Kolkata Police is conducting a multi-angled investigation to uncover the root cause of the incident. An official confirmed that the CCTV footage is currently being examined. The Chief Minister has explicitly stated that appropriate action must be taken against those who failed to manage the crowd, adding firmly that no one will be spared.
