New Delhi: India Gate became the site of a protest against the government yesterday, as the parents of Ankita Bhandari, a victim from Uttarakhand,d staged a demonstration. They were protesting against the appointment of BJP leader Dushyant Gautam as the Governor of Sikkim. Several Congress leaders arrived to support them, prompting the police to intervene and take everyone into custody.
Prominent Congress leader Rahul Gandhi also joined the protest. Late at night, the police took Ankita Bhandari’s protesting parents into custody from India Gate. Abhijit Deepke, founder of the ‘Cockroach Janta Party,’ has expressed his outrage over this conduct by the Delhi Police and the government.

The Delhi Police released Ankita Bhandari’s parents just hours after taking them into custody. According to information from the Congress party, Ankita’s parents have now gone to stay at a relative’s house. Following their detention, the Delhi Police had taken them to the Tilak Nagar police station. Ankita’s father has issued a 24-hour ultimatum to the system: if the government does not remove Dushyant Gautam from the position of Governor within 24 hours, people across the country will take to the streets, and the government will be held responsible.
What is the Ankita Bhandari case?
For context, 19-year-old Ankita Bhandari worked as a receptionist at a hotel near Rishikesh. She was murdered on September 18, 2022. The perpetrators disposed of her body in the Chilla Canal. Her body was recovered from the canal on September 24, 2022.
The resort owner, Pulkit Arya (son of former BJP leader Vinod Arya), and two of his managers, Saurabh Bhaskar and Ankit Gu, ta were sentenced to life imprisonment by a lower court. The Uttarakhand High Court recently rejected the bail pleas of all three individuals.

Congress leaders, who were sitting at a protest site near India Gate in support of Ankita Bhandari, were taken into custody by the Delhi Police. During the police action, several opposition leaders and protesters,s including Congress leaders Pawan Khera and Supriya Shrinate, as well as Manglaur MLA Qazi Nizamudd, were detained. The previous day, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi had also visited India Gate to meet with Ankita Bhandari’s parents.
