New Delhi: Everyone is eagerly awaiting a reconciliation between the US and Iran. Although they sit at the negotiating table with the aim of reaching an agreement, the outcome remains nil. Qatar’s mediation efforts to de-escalate tensions between the two nations have once again proven unsuccessful; no concrete results emerged from the high-level meetings held this week.
According to sources, both sides remain adamant in their respective stances, with neither willing to yield. The persistent differences have raised the spectre of war once again. Should this happen, instability could spread across the Middle East. US officials suggest that President Donald Trump might order the resumption of large-scale military operations following the mid-term elections. Meanwhile, Qatar has not abandoned its mediation efforts.
Hours-long meeting yields no results.
A meeting facilitated by Qatar lasted several hours on Monday but failed to produce a breakthrough. Lead mediator Ali Al-Thawadi held a marathon session in New York with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and his team. Sources indicate that a two-page proposal for an agreement, drafted by Qatar, was discussed in detail during the meeting.
The objective was to address Iran’s demand for the complete lifting of the US Navy blockade, alongside the US demand for Iran to curtail its nuclear program.
On Monday evening, Ali Al-Thawadi travelled to Washington to meet with Trump’s envoy, Jared Kushner, and other US officials. Vice President JD Vance also participated briefly in this crucial meeting. However, the White House has explicitly declined to comment on the matter.
White House hopes dashed.
Surprisingly, the White House had been quite optimistic about the entire process on Monday morning. While briefing several media outlets, including Axios, US officials stated that the talks were moving in a highly “positive and constructive” direction. During this time, the US claimed that Iran had shown signs of adopting a flexible stance on nuclear issues—even suggesting that progress was possible if Iran took concrete steps to limit its nuclear program. It is worth noting that finding a middle ground between the US and Iran is not currently considered easy. Tensions could once again flare up between the two nations.
Conflicting claims
A source familiar with the situation revealed that no meaningful progress was made during Monday’s talks. The source indicated that the negotiations have completely stalled; the Iranian side is making demands that the US simply cannot accept. Meanwhile, the US believes it is winning the standoff and, consequently, sees no need for any agreement.
