A US official shared this information while speaking to CNN; the statement comes at a time when intermediaries are attempting to bring the US and Iran back to the negotiating table.
Agreement Possible Only with Resolution of Nuclear Issue
According to a US official, the US is engaging in positive and constructive dialogue with Iran through intermediaries. However, the official clarified that no agreement can be reached without resolving the nuclear issues. On Saturday, Donald Trump rejected a recent proposal from Iran that suggested reopening the Strait of Hormuz, deeming the proposal unacceptable.
When Might Talks Take Place?
On Sunday, US President Donald Trump told Axios that further talks with Iran are likely to occur this week. According to the US official, Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, Jared Kushner, Vice President JD Vance, and Secretary of State Marco Rubio are leading the discussions on behalf of the US.
Regarding Iran’s proposal, Donald Trump remarked that while Tehran seeks a negotiated settlement, the terms do not align with the kind of agreement the US desires. Trump noted that these were conditions the US might have agreed to a year ago, adding that Iran had overplayed its hand.
Iran Ready to Yield on Nuclear Issue
According to US officials, Iran is now prepared to show flexibility on the nuclear issue. However, the two sides have not yet reached an agreement on the timeline for implementing these commitments.
