New Delhi: There appears to be no path to peace emerging between the US and Iran, and consequently, the situation remains tense. While efforts to initiate dialogue continue on both sides, the likelihood of finding a middle ground seems negligible; both parties remain adamant about their respective conditions.
Amidst the ongoing tensions with the US, Araghchi has clarified his country’s stance. He stated that while Iran desires peace, it is also prepared for genuine diplomacy. Iran’s President presented the country’s perspective on global developments at the UN General Assembly.
Specifically, Iran articulated its position regarding the threats of war and attacks posed by the US and Israel. In this context, Foreign Minister Araghchi emphasised that they had come to New York to pursue peace, not to escalate the conflict.
What did Iran’s Foreign Minister say?
Amidst the deteriorating situation in the Middle East, Iranian Foreign Minister Araghchi made a significant statement via social media. He wrote that he and President Pezeshkian had come to New York for peace, not to escalate the war.
In an interview with NBC’s Meet the Press, Araghchi stated, “We are fully prepared for war to break out again, even a devastating one—but at the same time, we are ready for genuine diplomacy. The decision rests with President Donald Trump. Araghchi noted that his meetings in New York are focused on the conditions for reopening the Strait of Hormuz.
Accusation of lying levelled against the US
Apart from the Foreign Minister, Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf took the US to task in a social media post. He wrote, “The US claims that Iran does not control the Strait of Hormuz, yet oil prices have risen by $35 to $50.” Ghalibaf stated that either the market is foolish or the US is lying.
Araghchi’s statement comes at a time when President Donald Trump has completely rejected Iran’s proposal. Iran had proposed reopening the Strait of Hormuz and halting hostilities in the region, but Trump dismissed the idea outright. He further remarked that Iran offered the deal to reopen the Strait because it is under pressure.
It is worth noting that efforts to initiate talks between the US and Iran have been underway for some time. Tensions in the Strait of Hormuz have disrupted the flow of oil, and the standoff over this waterway has now become a critical issue in the peace negotiations between the two nations.
