New Delhi: Political temperatures have soared ever since reports of disagreements among the Election Commissioners surfaced. Opposition parties are demanding not only the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar but also his imprisonment. Now, the ‘Cockroach Janata Party’ (CJP) has also launched an attack against the Election Commissioner.
The CJP had previously warned Gyanesh Kumar to resign within 48 hours. On Saturday morning, the party surprised everyone by issuing a major ultimatum. If the CEC does not resign, it will launch a nationwide movement starting October 2, preparations for which are already underway.
No resignation by Saturday means a nationwide movement
Political activity has intensified since reports of discord among the three Election Commissioners emerged. The Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) stated that if CEC Gyanesh Kumar does not resign by Saturday, a nationwide movement will commence on October 2. Meanwhile, people have begun gathering at Jantar Mantar.
Sharing a video of the gathering of youths at Jantar Mantar, the CJP wrote: “The desire for martyrdom is now in our hearts; let us see how much strength lies in the arms of the killer. You too should get ready. See you on October 2.” The CJP had previously issued a 48-hour ultimatum.
Additionally, questions regarding the Election Commission are now being raised within the NDA itself. Just a day ago, Chirag Paswan—an NDA ally and Union Minister—stated that if allegations have been made, the CEC needs to come forward and present his side of the story.
What allegations have been levelled against the Election Commission?
According to a report by The Indian Express, two Election Commissioners had raised strong objections to the Chief Election Commissioner’s decisions over the past ten months, but their concerns went unheeded. As soon as this news broke, the Congress adopted an aggressive stance against the Election Commission, with party workers taking to the streets in several cities on Friday.
Congress workers staged protests outside Election Commission offices in Kolkata, Mumbai, Lucknow, Bengaluru, Dehradun, and Delhi. The Delhi Police detained several workers during these demonstrations.
Know CJP’s Demands
Launching a campaign titled “Fix the Election Commission,” the CJP issued a stern warning. Party Convener Abhijit Deepke and Co-conveners Sourav Das and Ashutosh Ranka alleged that over 130 million (13 crore) valid names were dropped from the draft electoral rolls across 30 states and Union Territories due to the SIR process.
They demanded that the Election Commission prove that every name removed from the electoral roll was deleted through a legal, transparent, and reviewable process. The CJP has demanded the immediate resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, as well as an independent inquiry into the decisions made during the SIR process.
