New Delhi: The Yogi government of Uttar Pradesh is currently stepping up to support the destitute. In Etawah, the ‘Mukhyamantri Durghatna Kalyan Yojana’ (Chief Minister’s Accident Welfare Scheme) is proving to be a lifeline for farming families. Under this scheme, families receive financial assistance of up to ₹5 lakh from the government in the event of a death or disability resulting from farming-related or other accidents.
The UP government has expanded the scope of this scheme to include not only primary landowners but also sharecroppers, leaseholders, and landless agricultural workers. The state government is proving to be a boon for such farmers.
₹5 Lakh Credited to the Account
Prem Singh, a resident of Nagla village in the Jaswantnagar Assembly constituency, died in a road accident about eight months ago. He was approximately 53 years old. He was on his way to fetch fodder for his buffaloes when a motorcycle approaching from behind struck him near the Bhognipur Canal. The impact caused Prem Singh to fall into a ditch. Villagers informed his family, and his elder brother, Harishchandra Jatav, rushed him to the District Hospital in Etawah. However, doctors declared him dead during treatment.
Prem Singh’s family includes three daughters and two sons. One daughter is already married, while the other two are aged around 19 and 21. Both sons are minors. Prem Singh owned approximately five bighas of land. Following his death, the family’s financial condition deteriorated; however, they learned about the welfare scheme from fellow villagers.
Subsequently, the Lekhpal (revenue official) assisted the family. Necessary documents, including an Aadhaar card, photographs, and the Khatauni (land record),w ere collected from Prem Singh’s wife, Phool Devi, and an online application was submitted. Officials then visited their home to conduct a survey. About four months later, ₹5 lakh was credited to Phool Devi’s bank account.
Assistance for Daughters’ Marriages
It is worth noting that the ₹5 lakh assistance has brought some relief to the family’s financial situation. This fund will help with the marriages of the daughters. Both minor sons are currently pursuing their education. The family is now also facing a housing crisis, as their old room has collapsed. Phool Devi is hopeful of receiving a house under the housing scheme.
Among the victims was Ramnarayan Sharma from Nagri village in the Jaswantnagar assembly constituency, who died in a road accident. He was approximately 68 years old. On September 20, 2025, he had gone to Firozabad to get medicine. While returning and crossing the road near his village, he was struck by an unidentified vehicle.
He died on the spot. Although he was taken to the hospital, doctors declared him dead. Following the post-mortem, the family applied under the scheme. Ramnarayan’s son, Harishchandra, stated that he learned about the scheme via mobile phone. He submitted an online application along with his Aadhaar card, land record (Khatauni), and bank passbook. Neha Yadav, the Lekhpal (revenue official) at the time, assisted with the process, and all three brothers submitted affidavits.
