If you’re looking for something delicious and a little different at home, chana dal puri is a great option. It can be made for breakfast, lunch, or any special occasion. The spicy chana dal filling and crispy puris are a delight for everyone, from children to adults. Let’s learn how to make it easily.

Ingredients

To make chana dal puri, you’ll need about one cup of chana dal, two cups of wheat flour, one to two green chilies, a little ginger, half a teaspoon of cumin seeds, half a teaspoon of carom seeds, a pinch of asafoetida, half a teaspoon of turmeric, half a teaspoon of red chili powder, half a teaspoon of coriander powder, salt to taste, a little garam masala, and finely chopped coriander leaves. Also, keep water for kneading the dough and oil for frying the puris.

Method

First, wash the chana dal thoroughly and soak it in water for about two to three hours. After draining the water, put the lentils in a pressure cooker. Add a little water as needed and cook. Cook the lentils until they become soft, but not too watery.

Heat a pan and add a little oil. Add cumin seeds, carom seeds, and asafoetida and lightly fry. Then, add finely chopped green chilies and ginger. Add the cooked chana dal and mix well. Add turmeric, red chili powder, coriander powder, garam masala, and salt. Cook for a few minutes, mixing the spices thoroughly with the lentils.

When the excess water in the lentils has evaporated, turn off the heat and let the mixture cool. After cooling, add the coriander leaves. If the filling seems too wet, fry it for a little longer, as the mixture should be dry for filling in puris.

Now, add a little salt and carom seeds to the wheat flour. Knead a slightly stiff dough with water and cover it for a few minutes. Roll the dough into small balls. Roll one dough ball lightly, place the prepared chana dal filling in the center, and seal the edges.

Now roll it out gently to form a puri. Be careful not to make the puri too thin. Prepare all the puris in this manner.

Heat oil in a pan. Once the oil is hot, add each puri and fry until golden brown and crispy on both sides. Transfer the prepared chana dal puris to a plate.

You can serve them hot with potato curry, yogurt, pickle, or your favorite chutney. This way, delicious chana dal puris are easily prepared at home.
