The Lok Sabha Privileges Committee has issued a notice to Congress leader and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, regarding a statement he made. The committee has asked him to present his side of the story and file a response. Rahul Gandhi has been given time until August 28th, 2026, to respond.

What is the whole matter?
The controversy stems from Rahul Gandhi’s comments during the Lok Sabha debate on the “Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026.” BJP MP Anurag Thakur had alleged that Rahul Gandhi used language during the debate that could be considered contrary to the rules of the House.
Anurag Thakur submitted a three-page letter to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on July 30, 2026. In it, he accused Rahul Gandhi of breach of privilege and contempt of the House. He stated that Rahul Gandhi made serious allegations against Home Minister Amit Shah during the debate, without following the necessary procedures as per the House rules.
What did Anurag Thakur demand?
In his letter, the BJP MP demanded that the Lok Sabha Speaker investigate the entire matter and refer it to the Privileges Committee for appropriate action. He also stated that Rahul Gandhi should be asked to tender an unconditional apology to the House and Home Minister Amit Shah.
Anurag Thakur alleges that Rahul Gandhi violated House rules even when mentioning his alleged conversation with protesting students in the Lok Sabha. He claimed that the Rahul Gandhi’s comments were not within the scope of parliamentary rules.
The Privileges Committee has now given Rahul Gandhi an opportunity to submit his response. Upon receiving the response by August 28 2026, the Committee can decide on further action on the matter. At this point, the issuance of the notice is not final. Only after Rahul Gandhi’s response will the next steps in the matter become clear.
