New Delhi: Monsoon rains are currently sweeping across the country, bringing relief to some areas while causing havoc in others. Continuous rainfall has led to worsening conditions. A tragic incident occurred in Mumbai’s Kurla area due to heavy rain; a landslide struck the Kurla locality early Wednesday morning, burying people under the debris. Two people have died, and it is feared that another 4 to 5 individuals remain trapped. A rescue operation is underway. Two bodies have been recovered from the debris so far. BMC Mayor Ritu Tawde has also arrived at the scene. The incident took place near Gausia Chawl, Rathod.
Rescue operation for trapped individuals underway
Relief and rescue teams arrived immediately after receiving news of the landslide. It is suspected that 4 to 5 people are trapped in the debris. Two people have lost their lives, and rescue efforts to extract the trapped individuals are ongoing. A video of the incident has also surfaced. Mumbai experienced heavy rainfall last night, causing a portion of a hill to collapse onto this chawl in Kurla.
According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the landslide was reported around 3:48 AM. Upon receiving the information, teams from the BMC Fire Brigade, police, the electricity distribution company, 108 ambulance services, and the BMC ward arrived at the site and launched relief and rescue operations. Work to clear the debris is proceeding rapidly, and arrangements have been made to transport the injured to the hospital.
Two lives lost
Meanwhile, DCP Ganesh Shinde stated that a landslide occurred in the Ashok Nagar area, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Ghatkopar police,e due to the rain. Two bodies have been recovered so far, and the rescue operation is ongoing. Personnel from the police and various essential rescue teams, ms including officials from the BMC, NDRF, and other agencies, have been deployed at the site. The incident occurred around 3 AM, and it is estimated that approximately 4 to 5 people are trapped.
NDRF Issues Warnings to Residents
It is worth noting that the NDRF and the administration are visiting such areas to warn residents. While people are urged to remain alert and avoid living in such structures, many continue to reside in these illegally constructed homes. These houses lack structural integrity and can collapse during the rainy season, potentially leading to untoward incidents. People have been urged to exercise caution to avoid such incidents. The situation could worsen in hilly areas.
