Electricity bills often spike during the summer months due to the use of air conditioners, fans, coolers, and other appliances. But there is no need to worry anymore; we are going to tell you about a scheme that offers relief from high electricity bills.
The Central Government is running the ‘PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana’ (PM Solar Home Free Electricity Scheme). Lakhs of families are already benefiting from zero electricity bills under this scheme. To avail of this benefit and get free electricity, you simply need to complete a few necessary steps. If you are concerned about your mounting monthly electricity bills, rest assured; here are the details of the scheme.

Growing Participation
There is significant enthusiasm among the public to join the Central Government’s PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana. So far, over 18.93 lakh rural and urban families have benefited from zero electricity bills under this scheme. The adoption rate of rooftop solar systems has also reached record levels.
This initiative is enabling lakhs of families to save thousands of rupees every month. Furthermore, the scheme has seen rapid expansion; while it initially took 118 days to reach the first 1 lakh families, that same milestone is now being achieved in just 6 days. Additionally, over 39.72 lakh rooftop solar systems have been installed across the country, benefiting more than 48.02 lakh families.
Who Can Benefit?
All residential consumers in rural and urban areas who have a grid-connected electricity connection can easily avail the benefits of this scheme. To participate, you simply need to apply through the national portal.
While it initially took 118 days to onboard 1 lakh families due to the time required to set up the portal, vendor network, and DISCOM infrastructure, the fully developed system now allows this same target to be achieved in just 6 days.
18.71 Lakh Rooftop Solar Systems Installed in 2025-26
Meanwhile, 18.71 lakh rooftop solar systems were installed under the PM Surya Ghar Yojana during the 2025-26 financial year. The total capacity of these installed systems stood at 6.7 gigawatts. This benefited over 22.71 lakh households, including those in rural areas.

Electricity Bills Reduced to Zero for 18.93 Lakh Households
The government informed the Rajya Sabha that following the installation of rooftop solar systems under the PM Surya Ghar Yojana, more than 18.93 lakh beneficiaries, including rural households, received zero electricity bills during certain billing periods, based on their electricity consumption.
