Kalyan Banerjee

Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Kalyan Banerjee has accused the BJP of promoting defection politics in West Bengal. He says that the BJP is trying to influence the political situation of the state by joining the leaders and public representatives of opposition parties. He said that in a democratic system the mandate given by the people should be respected.

Kalyan Banerjee claimed that Trinamool Congress believes in strengthening its organisation and working on public issues. According to him, ideological competition between political parties is a part of democracy, but encouraging public representatives to change parties cannot be considered a healthy political tradition.

However, BJP has been rejecting such allegations in the past as well. The party says that if any leader joins BJP of his own free will, it is his democratic right and it should not be seen as a result of any pressure or conspiracy.

Why does the debate on defection politics increase in the election environment?

As elections approach, political parties try to strengthen their organisation and bring together influential leaders. At such a time, if news of a leader changing his party comes to light, then political controversy also increases regarding it. In West Bengal too, this issue has been in constant discussion due to many leaders changing parties during the last few years.

Political analysts believe that the ruling and opposition parties often accuse each other of influencing public representatives. At the same time, the concerned parties argue that any leader has the democratic right to take decisions according to his political ideology and future. In such a situation, the issue of defection is not only political but also linked to democratic values and interpretation of mandate.
