New Delhi: New trade ties are being forged between India and New Zealand, a development viewed as a setback for countries like China. The visit of an Indian Prime Minister to New Zealand after four decades has proven highly significant for bilateral relations. The meeting in Auckland between PM Narendra Modi and the Prime Minister of New Zealand was significant not merely as a diplomatic courtesy but also in terms of trade.

Eighteen major agreements, including Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) and eight significant announcements, were finalised during the meeting. Such decisions will strengthen diplomatic and strategic ties between the two nations. Additionally, the two countries will be able to collaborate in sectors such as defence, maritime security, trade, agriculture, education, sports, and culture. This move is also seen as crucial for counterbalancing China’s growing influence in the Indo-Pacific region.

Key Agreements

The most significant agreements between India and New Zealand pertain to defence and maritime security. The armed forces of both nations will be able to collaborate on maritime security, information sharing, and joint operations, thereby fostering greater coordination between their militaries. Both countries agreed to share maritime charts and hydrographic data, which will enhance the security of maritime routes. Another agreement enables the navies of both nations to provide logistical support to each other when required.

Joint Fight Against Terrorism

The two nations will also cooperate on security and disaster management fronts. A decision has been made to establish a joint working group; both countries will share intelligence regarding terrorists and formulate joint strategies. An agreement has also been reached on disaster management, involving the sharing of expertise and technology to tackle earthquakes, tsunamis, and other natural disasters.

Benefits in the Agriculture and Dairy Sectors

Both countries will work to enhance cooperation in the dairy sector and share new technologies, research findings, and improved farming practices. Furthermore, a ‘Kiwi Action Plan’ will be launched. Two Centres of Excellence for kiwi will be established in Nagaland and Uttarakhand. This will provide farmers with new technology and training.

These sectors will receive a boost.

India and New Zealand have signed a new agreement to boost tourism, aiming to encourage more people to visit each other’s countries. Collaboration will also take place in the sports sector, focusing on athlete training, sports science, and sports medicine. New Zealand will assist in the development of the National Maritime Heritage Complex currently being built in Lothal, Gujarat. Additionally, both nations have successfully reached an agreement to promote art, culture, and heritage.
