New Delhi: Following a crushing defeat in the West Bengal Assembly elections, Mamata Banerjee’s TMC party is currently going through a rough patch. Even long-time, trusted allies are deserting the party. Moreover, TMC leaders are facing public protests in various places.

First, MLAs left, followed by MPs. Amidst this, Mamata Banerjee has suffered another major blow: Chandrima, one of her most trusted and loyal leaders, has resigned from her organisational post within the TMC. This is considered the biggest setback among all the departures from the party in the last two months, and it is likely to deal a significant blow to her political career. Mamata Banerjee currently faces the immense challenge of saving the party.

Letter Written to Mamata Banerjee

Trinamool Congress State President Chandrima Bhattacharya informed party chief Mamata Banerjee of her resignation via a letter. In the letter, Bhattacharya clarified that she is stepping down not only from the positions she held within the organisation but also resigning from her role as a signing authority for the party. Chandrima Bhattacharya has long been considered a prominent face of the Trinamool Congress, maintaining a strong grip on both the government and the organisational structure. Her sudden resignation has sent the political temperature in West Bengal soaring.

Rebel Leaders Take Over TMC Office

West Bengal politics is currently witnessing significant upheaval. Following the fragmentation of the TMC, Mamata Banerjee’s political future faces an existential threat. A rebel faction led by Ritabrata Banerjee has completely taken over the Trinamool Congress office located on the EM Bypass in Kolkata.

Furthermore, new posters have been put up on the building; notably, these posters do not feature images of former CM Mamata Banerjee or her nephew and MP, Abhishek Banerjee. Arup Roy has now been appointed as the party’s chairman in their place. Not only that, but a new lock has also been installed on the main entrance of the party building. Upon receiving this information, Kunal Ghosh arrived at the party office alongside other leaders and workers from the Kalighat faction, creating a tense atmosphere. This development also intensified political activity in the area.

Ritabrata was elected as the TMC leader.

It is worth noting that following a rebellion within Mamata Banerjee’s TMC, a large number of MLAs turned dissident on June 3, 2026, and elected Ritabrata as their leader. Out of the 80 TMC MLAs, 58 had rebelled and formed a separate faction.

The dissident MLAs collectively submitted a letter of support to the Assembly Speaker. Through this letter, they demanded that Ritabrata be appointed as the Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly, a request the Speaker immediately accepted.
